Action research as an enhancement of natural problem solving

"I think of action research as an extension of a natural approach to problem solving. Faced with a novel situation we often first investigate. We then develop an intention to act, and carry it out. We notice if it worked. Action research similarly cycles between intention, action and review. To this natural process it adds certain important enhancements. The review component is strengthened. Rigour and theory are given more attention. More care is given to identify who else should be involved, and how. Flexibility is strengthened. A variety of processes are used, many borrowed from other literatures and practices. This paper begins with a broad overview of action research from this perspective. Different aspects of my own variations on this approach are then examined and described in more detail. As I examine my use of action research, I illustrate my comments with examples. Most of these are taken from a university class I facilitated for many years." (author's abstract

INTEGRATION OF AN SAP SIMULATION GAME INTO AN IS COURSE

This paper describes the introduction of a simulation game into an IS class for business students not majoring in IS. The intention was to give the students experience in business processes and to demonstrate the importance of all components of an information system in providing information for business decision making. The students found the game enjoyable and (surprisingly to many) relatively easy to use. They gained an appreciation of ERP capabilities and saw how they might use such systems in their future workplaces. In addition to the enjoyment they also saw some of the implications of not following procedures or team members not completing their assigned tasks. The students strongly supported its inclusion in the course in future years

The architecture of the High Performance Storage System (HPSS)

The rapid growth in the size of datasets has caused a serious imbalance in I/O and storage system performance and functionality relative to application requirements and the capabilities of other system components. The High Performance Storage System (HPSS) is a scalable, next-generation storage system that will meet the functionality and performance requirements or large-scale scientific and commercial computing environments. Our goal is to improve the performance and capacity of storage by two orders of magnitude or more over what is available in the general or mass marketplace today. The Maine Annex, published by the students of the University of Maine at the Brunswick Campus, was launched January 10, 1947. Editors introduced the publication as the product of a group of progressive students attending the Brunswick Campus. The goal of the publication, according to editors, was to tell the story of our life on this campus. The four-page, tabloid-sized paper included display advertising from area businesses.
